Plumbing problems can cost you a lot of money, not only from having to get them fixed but also from the damage the water can do to your home. But by being slightly prepared and understanding how to look after your plumbing can save you time and money.

One of the first things that you can do to protect your home from water damage is to install a flood alarm. A flood alarm is a device that creates a sound when it comes into contact with water. With a flood alarm fitted you will be quickly alerted if there are any issues with your plumbing.

The next thing to check is how well does your toilet flush. If you have to fiddle with the handle to stop the water from running constantly, or you need to flush it several times to get the toilet to flush properly. Then its time to change some of the parts in the toilet cistern. This is not an expensive task and if you are on a ater meter then it could save you some money as well.

If you have a plumbing job that is too big for you to do then its time to get a professional plumber in. When you are getting quotes, always ask for a written quote. A professional plumber will include the material and labour costs on the quote so that you both know the full price for the job up front. If you do not get a written quote then when the plumber starts work you do not have anything to reference too incase of a dispute.

If you live in an area with hard water then it is a good idea to check all your intake hoses for washing machines, dishwashers etc, often in case of limescale build up which could split them. You can use limescale remover if you want to but it’s nearly as cheap to simply replace the hoses themselves.

if you are doing your plumbing yourelf then you need to ask yourself, “How good is my soldering?”. One of the biggest mistakes that a lot of people make when trying to solder is that they do not get the interior of the fitting and the outside of the pipe nice and shiny. You should use a piece of fine emery cloth on both surfaces until they are clean and bright. When you are soldering always remember you must heat the fitting and not the pipe. When you heat the fitting the solder is drawn into the fitting by capillary action.

If you have a blocked toilet and need a plunger, then you need one with a flange that sticks out from the end and fits into the hole in the base of the toilet bowl. These work so much better than the classic cup style plungers as they are able to create a much tighter seal in the drain.

One of the biggest causes of blocked sinks and baths is hair. When hair is combined with a build up of soap it can completely block your sink, shower or bath. The best way to prevent loose hairs from getting into the pipes and causing a blockage is to place strainers in each of the plug holes to catch the hairs before they go down.

As mentioned at the start of the post by knowing how your plumbing works and thinking ahead, you can save not just money but a lot of time as well. There is nothing worse than a plumbing incident to ruin your plans for the day. By simply following the advice in this article could save you money and time.
